Bailey hates his new school. He has no friends. His dog Fuzzy slobbers all over him. BLAH! This book allows children to follow Bailey’s journey as he discovers how to change his BLAH to HA-HA-HA! ‘Bailey Beats The Blah’ is all about empowering children to beat worry thoughts and sad days, as well as  developing the all important skills of resilience. The book naturally invites discussion on emotional awareness and developing pro-active plans to lift a child’s mood. It’s a book for children, families, teachers, parents and counselors.

So let’s meet Karen and learn a little about why writing this book was so important to her!

What was your inspiration for writing Bailey Beats the Blah?
As a bullied teacher, I experienced severe stress which eventually led to screaming night terrors and mental illness after parents harassed me. Now that I’ve recovered, I wish to empower children with resilience skills to prevent them becoming ill with stress, anxiety and depression. I want to boost their self-esteem and self-respect.

I’d love to know a little about your interactive storytelling sessions in schools? What is your most popular activity?
With Bailey Beats the Blah, I tell the story with costumes/props inviting children to emotionally and physically react via audience participation, chanting responses to how Bailey is feeling. Later the class retells the story using puppets. This springboards discussion on how Bailey changed his blah to ha-ha-ha and how they can change sad days too.

What’s one thing that you know works well to help you beat the blues?
Learning a wide repertoire of coping skills empowers children and adults alike. Early morning exercise lifts the mood and boosts positive thinking for the whole day especially when you combine active meditation and gratitude.

What’s one of your most vivid childhood memories?
Making mud-pies in my friend’s cubby house. Day-dreaming under a shady willow tree on the banks of the creek. Playing circuses, hanging upside down on a trapeze swing. Escaping into the imaginary world of ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ children’s book.

Thank you so much for dropping by Karen and sharing your thoughts and giving readers the chance to win a great prize.

So Don’t Forget the GIVEAWAY!
