Personal Writing – 100 Things I Want To Do In My Life!
Welcome to Monday’s Muse! Every Monday morning of the school term in 2014, Write Away With Me posts an open ended writing and/or storytelling activity that you can try with your class or your children at home.
This term at The Writer’s Club, we’re exploring personal writing. (You can read the full program here) So in the spirit of using writing to connect our head and hearts, I wanted to share this list with you – 100 Hundred Things To Do In My Life.
For the last two years, I have completed one of these lists at the start of each year. Setting goals in writing propels me forward and also challenges me to nurture my own creativity. It’s easy to use our free time to do the same things, even if they do not always make us happy. When I take out my list, I’m often surprised to find that I have achieved some items without any planning at all. Sometimes, just the act of writing is enough to set the ball in motion. At other times, I actively set out to cross another item off my list. I took out my list from 2013 last week. It means something special to see the things I did with my Dad listed there. So many wonderful memories… Reading my lists also helps me remember what I have achieved so far. Some days I need reminding of this! It’s easy to focus on what we haven’t done.
Childhood is a wonderful time to dream and start to make room for our future selves. This list gives young writers the opportunity to use writing to set goals, dream, think, create memories and most importantly, have fun. Perhaps you could also do a class list. You can download the list here at Jessica Swift’s website (Magically Uplifting Artworks!) You’ll also find lots of other creative and colourful lists here, for both you and your students. So get dreaming and planning.
